Print it, deal it out, play it. Each file is a fictional investigation dossier — scene report, forensic findings, a site plan, four suspect statements and the evidence. No page tells you who did it. Finding the killer is your job.

The Silent Dome

Meridian Observatory, 3,900 metres up, mid-January. A four-hour exposure runs all night. By morning the director lies dead at the foot of the dome stairs and it looks like a fall — but the telescope that spent the night recording the sky recorded something else as well.

The Interval

Opening night at the Orpheum Theatre. Six hundred people in the house and a twenty-minute interval. When the bell rings for the second act the director does not return to his box — he is lying in it, killed with the stage dagger that was supposed to be blunt.

How to Play

On Your Own

Read the pages in order, take notes, and fill in the verdict form at the back of the file. Do not open the solution PDF until the form is done. Around 50 minutes.

As a Group (2–6 players)

Hand out the suspect pages, one per player, and let each person defend their suspect. Keep the evidence pages in the middle where everyone can see them. Argue for 30–40 minutes, then everyone votes in secret.

Without a Printer

You can read the files on a phone, tablet or laptop. Printing is not required — it is just more fun with the documents spread out on a table.

The Detective's Two Rules

  1. Everyone has a secret, but not every secret is murder. In each file all four suspects are hiding something; for three of them it has nothing to do with the killing.
  2. Statements contradict each other; records do not. A person can misremember or lie. A machine log cannot. When in doubt, go back to the document.
