Ernst Vogler was the last of a dying breed — a master clockmaker who still practiced the ancient art of hand-crafting mechanical timepieces in an age of quartz and digital. But at seventy-eight, Ernst was confronting the question that haunts every master craftsman: who would carry on his legacy? The arrival of Tobias Engel four years ago seemed like providence. The young man's natural talent was extraordinary, and Ernst poured his knowledge into the apprentice with fierce dedication. But Ernst was also possessive and controlling, unwilling to let Tobias emerge from his shadow. When Tobias submitted his own design to the Geneva competition, Ernst saw it not as a sign of his teaching success but as a betrayal — a theft of techniques that belonged to the workshop, not to any individual.
