Kaplan was known for his generosity with those who served him loyally, but he was equally known for his ruthlessness when he felt betrayed. In the months before his death, Kaplan had grown increasingly paranoid, confiding to his wife that he believed someone close to him was stealing from his inventory. He hired a private auditor who confirmed that approximately fifty thousand euros worth of uncut stones had gone missing over the previous year, but the auditor was unable to identify the thief before Kaplan departed on his final journey. The train trip itself was both business and personal — Kaplan was traveling to Vienna to meet with a major buyer and to consult with a specialist about his deteriorating heart condition, a fact known only to his wife and his bodyguard. The irony that his murder was designed to mimic cardiac arrest suggests the killer possessed intimate knowledge of Kaplan's medical vulnerabilities. Those who knew Kaplan well understood that the Orient Line route held deep sentimental value for him — it was on this very train, thirty years earlier, that he had proposed to his wife during a snowstorm in the Balkans.
