Case Briefing

Wednesday, December 31st — New Year's Eve at the Grand Imperial Hotel in Vienna. For over a century, the Grand Imperial has hosted the most exclusive New Year's Eve gala in Austria. Four hundred guests in black tie and evening gowns filled the gilded ballrooms, the champagne flowed endlessly, and a 40-piece orchestra played Strauss waltzes beneath crystal chandeliers that had illuminated celebrations since 1889.

Conrad Spiegel, the 68-year-old owner and patriarch of the Grand Imperial, presided over the evening as he had for the past three decades. He greeted guests in the marble lobby, raised a toast in the Grand Ballroom at 9 PM, and danced a waltz with the Austrian culture minister's wife. To the assembled guests, Conrad appeared his usual charismatic self — impeccably dressed, warmly generous, the consummate host.
