Four hundred guests in black tie and evening gowns filled the gilded ballrooms, the champagne flowed endlessly, and a 40-piece orchestra played Strauss waltzes beneath crystal chandeliers that had illuminated celebrations since 1889.
Conrad Spiegel, the 68-year-old owner and patriarch of the Grand Imperial, presided over the evening as he had for the past three decades. He greeted guests in the marble lobby, raised a toast in the Grand Ballroom at 9 PM, and danced a waltz with the Austrian culture minister's wife. To the assembled guests, Conrad appeared his usual charismatic self — impeccably dressed, warmly generous, the consummate host.
