Saturday, November 23rd — the Ardnamurchan Peninsula, the most westerly point of the British mainland. The lighthouse stands on a volcanic headland where the Atlantic Ocean meets the Sound of Mull, a place so remote that the nearest village is fourteen miles of single-track road to the east. On clear days, the view stretches to the islands of Mull, Coll, and the distant shadow of the Outer Hebrides. But on this night, Storm Callum had turned the world into a howling darkness of horizontal rain and salt spray.
The Ardnamurchan Lighthouse was built in 1849 by Alan Stevenson — uncle of Robert Louis Stevenson — and is one of the most architecturally distinctive lighthouses in Scotland. Its Egyptian-style tower rises 36 meters from the volcanic rock, topped by a lantern room and an external gallery walkway encircled by Victorian cast iron railings. The light was automated in 1988, and the keeper's quarters were converted into heritage accommodation managed by the Northern Lighthouse Board.
